This is my roomie Lindsay modeling my scarf. Check back tomorrow to see a picture of my friend with her B-day present. |
**If you are not interested in learning to make this scarf, then stop reading here; this post will not interest you.**
Here's my disclaimer: I don't really know how to sew, so there are mostly likely better ways to do most of what I did. If you are a crafty person who knows them, just do it your way, and maybe post your improvements in the comments for the rest of us.
I made this scarf out of 1 yard of Jersey-knit fabric. It's an infinity scarf (which means it's one, long loop) and it consists of one big loop and two thinner, braided loops.
Then cut 3 2-inch strips and 3 1-inch strips, all length-wise. These will become the braids of your scarf. I chose to make mine all navy.
Once you've cut them, sew the tops of each braid's strips together.
Then, secure the top of each section in a drawer or something else that will hold it for you and braid your strips. You will need more space than you think, as the strips are long and easily tangled.
Once you've braided each section, sew the top to secure the braid.
Now you can begin assembling the pieces of the scarf. Start by folding your big section in half, and then sewing together the ends (you are trying to make a long circle here).
Then alternate sewing the braids onto the top, front end of your loop.
Now comes the part that I think is trickiest and that requires the most sewing ability. Make a little sleeve on your scarf by sewing a coordinating piece of fabric around the top (where all of the seams will be gathered). Then flip it inside out so the seam is on the inside. Once you've made the sleeve, sew around the edges to secure it in place on the scarf. Your result should look something like this, hopefully even a little better:
Ta-da! Thanks again Lindsay for modeling!
